August 22, 2014, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada : The tar sands region of Canada is a boreal forest, traditional territory of the Dene, Cree and Metis indigenous people. Oil Sands surface mining impact the natural landscape by stripping it bare and digging it up, while releasing toxic waste.<br />
 Fort McMurray is North America's fastest growing city, riding the boom of the Athbasca Tar Sands Development in an area the size of England. From 61,000 in 2011, the population is expected to reach 120,000 in 2014.<br />
